Stephanie Thadal NR 606: Diagnosis and Management in Psychiatric-Mental Health II Practicum Reflection Paper

I have always been apprehensive about working with the pediatric population. However, I have discovered that several mental health illnesses begin in youth. Therefore, it is imperative as a psychiatric provider that I am comfortable as well as knowledgeable working across the lifespan. With that being said this course has expanded my knowledge base as it pertains to pediatric mental health. Early intervention is necessary in improving the outcomes of pediatric patients dealing with mental illness. This means that as a future PMHNP I need to be well versed in psychopharmacology and latest evidence-based practice when it comes to psychiatric mental health (Reist et al, 2022). I plan to insert some of the AACN Essential domain into my daily practice by affectively engaging in partnership. In my efforts to provide holistic collaborative care to my patients. I plan to collaborate closely with not only primary care providers, neurologist, and other specialist as it pertains to my patient’s wellbeing. Collaboration of care increases medical compliance, cohesion of care, and improves patient’s outcomes. Collaborative care is known to increase providers adherence to treatment plans, decrease patient relapse and unnecessary hospital visits (Reist et al, 2022). In addition, to implementing ACCN domain into my treatment plan as a provider, I also plan to incorporate NONPF competencies into practice. One competency that stands out to me the most is building a culture of safety through evidence-based interventions and quality measures. Evidence based practices are supported and proven scientific methods that work in the mental health realm. Some of these practices include cognitive behavioral therapy, patient centered goals, and collaborative approach (O’Brien et al, 2016).

Lastly, I know being a provider working across the lifespan will be challenging. I do feel like this course has prepared me a bit more to maneuver the pediatric population. Many children are misdiagnosed, or their mental health illness is not treated adequately. With my training my goals are to properly identify, diagnose, treat, and collaborate care for my patients. Effectively treating this population can prevent school failure, suicide , substance abuse, and legal issues. My ultimate goal is to have my patients reach their full potential( O’Brien et al, 2016).
